This collection contains indexes and transcripts of newspapers, gravestone inscriptions and various publications gathered by the Tipperary Clans Heritage Society in the 1990s. This group focused on information which pre-dated civil registration (1864), and is principally obituaries, death/funeral notices and burials. While the collection has a special relevance for the southwestern province of Munster, with extensive transcripts from Cork, Limerick and Tipperary newspapers, it also covers many other parts of the country (esp. Antrim, Armagh, Carlow, Dublin, Fermanagh, Galway, Kilkenny, Louth, Offaly, Wexford, etc.).
The main newspapers include:
- Armagh Guardian
- Belfast Mercury
- Cork Constitution
- Cork Examiner
- Cork Mercantile Chronicle
- Drogheda Argus
- Dublin Correspondent
- Dublin Weekly Register
- Ennis Chronicle & Clare Advertiser
- Enniskillen Chronicle & Erne Packet
- Evening Packet & Correspondent
- Freeman’s Journal
- Kilkenny Journal
- King’s County Chronicle
- Leinster Journal
- Limerick Chronicle
- Limerick Reporter & Tipperary Vindicator
- Southern Reporter & Cork Commercial Courier
- Tipperaryman
- Tuam Herald
- Waterford Chronicle
- Waterford Mail
And many more.
The project indexed many gravestone inscriptions from fieldwork in the graveyards and working with various publications. This data in particularly good for the Tipperary area.
The Tipperary Clans Heritage Society was able to gather this information by availing of an Irish social welfare initiative known as the “Student Summer Jobs Scheme” which allowed full-time third level students to undertake useful community employment. The Society employed dozens of students to input this information over many years.
More recently the History of Family Project at Limerick University stepped in to help archive the collection and facilitate its digitisation and indexation in partnership with Eneclann and findmypast.ie. The History of Family Project and the have received generous support from the IRCHSS and the John & Pauline Ryan HOFP Fund.
Advice on using the index:
Users are advised to search with and without a specific county name. Nearly half of the entries do not record the county name, so to find all possible options we advise the widest possible search options.
