Warwickshire past and present

Dating back to the early 11th century, Warwickshire has historically included places like Coventry, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham.

Warwickshire saw immense upheaval during the English Civil War. In the Middle Ages, the county was dominated by the fast-growing textile trade in Coventry.

Later, Warwickshire thrived in the Industrial Revolution due to its highly-productive coalfields and large industrial cities like Birmingham and Coventry.  The county was also the centre of the national canal system and one of the first intercity railway lines ran through it.

According to a 13th-century legend, Lady Godiva protested taxes by riding naked through Coventry. The game of rugby was first played at Rugby School. Jaguar’s classic E-Type sports car was assembled and produced in Coventry.

Did your ancestors invest in the Warwickshire Coal Company, live in the Regency town of Leamington Spa or work on the canals?

Coventry Cathedral was destroyed by bombs during World War 2. Its ruins remain today beside a new cathedral that was built after the war.
